One year ago I made a promise to perform an act of kindness per day and share it with the world in a blog. Tonight, 2013 draws to a close and so will end this journal. It has been an enlightening, gratifying experience which has shown me that there are always opportunities to reach out to someone with a small thoughtful gesture. Family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, students, strangers, animals, humanitarian groups, the list goes on and on - I have tried to make a difference in some way to show that kindness is contagious, and each one of us has the potential for bringing joy to a fellow human being or a furry friend. What I have accomplished is nothing extraordinary; everyone can show compassion and benevolence. One must remember that all of us have the power to make someone happy and the responsibility to look for these moments. So, today as I close this final post, my act of kindness is the following quotes that you may reflect and share. I will continue to perform good deeds every day and encourage you to do the same. We are all on this planet together; let's watch one kind action lead to another. Have a blessed 2014, my friends.
I spent the last three days in Boston where I didn't have an opportunity to write this blog; however, I continued my random acts of kindness during my visit. I left quarters in several vending machines at a Thruway rest area; I made donations at all the historic sites we toured, and finally I placed a small gift on the table of our hosts to thank them for their hospitality. But all these acts are insignificant in light of the message that I want and need to express. Last night our community lost a young man in an accident, and in this area where most everyone knows one another, this is a loss that ripples through the families. Our prayers go out to all his friends and relatives. Please take the time every day to tell those you love how much they mean to you. Don't take life for granted; appreciate every moment you have with each other.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-51499199248578011912013-12-27T17:57:00.000-05:002013-12-27T17:57:06.653-05:00Dec. 27, 2013 Happy Birthday, Little BrotherWhen you grow up in a family of five children, and you are the youngest, and your birthday is two days after Christmas, your special day might get overlooked from year to year. That is unless you are the cute, nice, sweet one whom everyone dotes on, of course. That would be my youngest brother whose birthday is today. Although I am not able to see him often, we keep in touch through photos and email. I sent him a gift today through Facebook for all the world to see! Happy Birthday, little brother. Hope to get together in 2014!
The ease of Internet shopping makes it very attractive to the consumer, and, I admit, it is often preferable to avoid the crowds and travel concerns surrounding a visit to the stores by just clicking the mouse a few times. Voila! Your purchase is on its way. Today, however, we headed to a local ski shop to check out some boots. From the minute we walked through the door, we were welcomed and provided with information by the friendly employees. I made sure to tell the owner how impressed I was with her staff, and complimented her on her business. She thanked us for the support . Remember to shop at these community enterprises. Their success depends on our patronage.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-254108820968893922013-12-25T17:02:00.000-05:002013-12-25T17:02:09.814-05:00Dec. 25, 2013 #Christmas#Traditions

Family traditions are one of the most important parts of holiday celebrations. I was fortunate this year that two of my three children were able to be home for Christmas, and we could carry on the traditions we have developed over the years. The fence is around the tree; the stuffed animals sit in front of it; the manger is set up on the side table, and the stockings are hanging from their decorative metal hooks. I was excited to continue the rituals for another year. There will be times in the future when it may not be possible, and then we will create some new methods of celebrating these family times together. But for now, I am content to be surrounded by my loved ones and the customs we hold dear. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-35319600227672523952013-12-24T15:49:00.000-05:002013-12-24T15:49:08.173-05:00Dec. 24, 2013 Expressing Gratitude

I believe that many of us are grateful for a multitude of things, but we often forget to express it or perhaps we think that those around us are aware of our appreciation without us telling them. It never hurts to let people know that we are thankful for their presence in our lives. My goal for this day was to recognize a few individuals for their positive impact on me. I posted and shared a thank you to one of the journalists for her wonderful Christmas story in this morning's paper. I delivered several bottles of wine to friends in the village. I was able to give and receive warm hugs and greetings as I saw former students and friends throughout the day. And although I can not tell him in person, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my gratitude to my father who was born on this day in 1928; you taught me so much, and for that I am indebted.
It simply seems a courteous thing to do. Today I had to go to the mall for some last minute shopping as did thousands of other people. We all looked slightly frantic; although, there still remains tomorrow for the true procrastinators. As I entered the building, I saw three women who were approaching the exit, so I held the door for them . What a pleasant exchange of thank you and Merry Christmas, I got. They were so grateful for this small gesture. Later, when I was leaving, I again held the door for a woman with a cane, and she stopped to tell me what a nice thing I had done by waiting for her to slowly enter the store. I am amazed that this little action brought such smiles and holiday wishes. It really doesn't take much to brighten someone's day.
We are fortunate to have a man in our community who has created a wealth of videos depicting our school presentations, athletic contests, history lectures, board meetings, and current events over the decades. These are broadcast on a local channel and are available on the Internet. What fun it is to watch one's children singing in the elementary Christmas show or scoring that goal in the big hockey game years later. If you want to stay informed on village happenings, these reports will enlighten you. We have come to expect this man at every activity, and forget that it takes funding to film and produce all these shows. I sent him a donation today which will go toward some of the expenses. I know many residents enjoy Home Town Cable, so take a minute to say thank you with a small contribution. It will be appreciated.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-51771480584935010792013-12-21T16:49:00.000-05:002013-12-21T16:49:03.774-05:00Dec. 21, 2013 Christmas TreatsAn ice storm was predicted for this weekend since the beginning of the week, so I made my plans early to bake today. I found recipes, bought ingredients, and cleared my schedule except for baking. It was relaxing to listen to the ice pinging off the windows knowing that I didn't have to go anywhere. After preparing several dozen cookies, I arranged some of them in holiday bags, threw on my coat, pulled on my boots, and headed outside to deliver them. It was somewhat treacherous to walk on the icy sidewalk, but I made it across the street where the little girl was delighted with her treats. Then, I went next door - no one home! So, I traipsed over to the following house - again, no answer. It was too risky to go much further. You can guess what I am doing tomorrow -slipping and sliding back to these homes with deliveries of cookies! Be safe, my friends!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-68590224220671726392013-12-20T15:11:00.000-05:002013-12-20T15:11:07.937-05:00Dec. 20, 2013 #Retirement# NursingToday I honor my sister who is retiring from a long career as a nurse. But my sister is well respected for her dedication and skills to the profession, and today is her last day. Monday, she won't have to get up early to head to the hospital, and instead can choose to do what she wants to do. I sent her a little gift which I know she'll enjoy, but more importantly I send her best wishes for a happy retirement filled with all the adventures she decides to complete. I chose to focus on myself today which I hope you will not find too selfish, but being my birthday, I wanted to create the perfect day. My ideal day holds three requirements: to learn something, to give something, and to do something. In addition, talking to my family always brightens the day for me. I imagine you are wondering how it went, right? I learned that Grandma Moses said" Life is what you make it. Always has been, always will be" when I reread the wonderful book called How Many People Does It Take To Make A Difference? One. I wrote two letters of recommendations for former students because if I can help make someone's dream of going to college come true then I must try to help them. And finally, I went cross country skiing on the local golf course all alone, breathing in the fresh air, struggling to maintain my balance on the bumpy mounds of snow. Exercise is good for the soul. I gabbed on the phone with my family and my friends sent me heartfelt messages. It was the perfect birthday. I am blessed.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-30328793399533751402013-12-18T16:43:00.001-05:002013-12-18T16:47:45.887-05:00Dec. 18, 2013 Giving and Receiving RAK at the Gas Station

When I ran into the co-owner of our local convenience store at the hardware store this morning, I figured I would see her again soon because I needed to buy gas, but I didn't tell her that I was stopping by her store. Maybe she guessed that I would be by in the next day or two because when I entered to pay for the gas, she handed me a bank deposit slip complete with our personal checking account numbers printed on it that I had inadvertently dropped in the post office. I was extremely grateful to her for seeing it and then holding it for me. In turn, I bought a beverage for the next person coming in for a warm drink on this wintry day. Although I had intended to remain anonymous in this pay-it-forward gesture, as it turned out, the recipient caught up with me in the parking lot and thanked me profusely. It was that kind of day: one resident helping out another. The joys of living in a village where nearly everyone knows everyone.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-40797437461057423162013-12-17T19:36:00.001-05:002013-12-17T19:36:44.094-05:00Dec. 17, 2013 Double Deeds #Hairdresser

My planned good deed was to generously tip my hairdresser. I've been going to the same salon for over fifteen years, and it is always fun to joke with the employees and other clients while being pampered. This is a profession which is valued by many women and often men, but can be taken for granted. My hairdresser was pleased with my offering today which is certainly well deserved. The random act of kindness also occurred at the salon when I met a young man whose father I know slightly and learned that he has big travel plans ahead of him. We spent several minutes discussing the pros and cons of modes of transportation. He had many questions for me about exploring Europe, and I enjoyed sharing advice with him. The conversation took an interesting turn when we discovered that we both know a former student who now lives in New Zealand. It truly is a small world!
I like to thank those around me who are professional, polite, and pleasant to work with. Whether it is a salesclerk, the postal carrier, a secretary, or the car repair person, I have much respect for their ability to do their job well while interacting courteously with the public. Today, I gave a couple of small gifts to the women who work in the Village office. They are consistently positive and considerate in the dealings with me and the residents. I had the pleasure of hearing one of them tell me of her numerous acts of kindness performed yesterday. From shoveling snow to paying it forward at Dunkin Donuts to delivering a sweet treat to a friend, she was incredibly kind in her good deeds! I am lucky to be surrounded by good people doing their best to help others. It doesn't take much to let them know they are appreciated.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-34563961409245290172013-12-15T16:27:00.002-05:002013-12-15T16:27:52.892-05:00Dec. 15, 2013 Triple RAK at the Grocery Store

I did not expect to have many opportunities for a random act of kindness today. The roads are covered with snow and the air is cold. Most people are not going to venture out in these conditions, but I had to go to the grocery store, so I bundled up and drove slowly there. The supermarket was nearly deserted as I had thought it would be; however, performing an RAK was quickly accomplished. A couple examining various types of squash thanked me for advice about the type to buy. Noticing several common items on sale, I grabbed a few to donate to the Food Shelf box on the way out of the store. Finally, I found a few dollars at the bottom of my purse and gave them to the young hockey players who were ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Three little deeds, but they will all be appreciated by someone in time.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-83814568636885913532013-12-14T16:15:00.001-05:002013-12-14T16:15:33.859-05:00Dec. 14, 2013 #Kindle Book For a Stranger

I had planned to remove my Little Free Library standing next to the sidewalk in front of the house for the winter. It is frigid here with snow, ice, and below zero temperatures. Who would drop off and borrow books during this season? Much to my surprise, it is still being used, so we have decided to leave it for all those hearty souls to enjoy. Today, I placed several kids Christmas puzzle books inside with the colorful covers facing outward to catch the eyes of some children passing by. They are free for the taking. Spread the word to the youngsters you know to stop by and select one. Encourage them to choose a book or two as well. My mother was born years ago on this day in a little town in South Dakota, and so began a life of raising children and creating a happy home. Throughout the good times and bad, she has remained a strong, caring woman who is always ready to listen and laugh to recent stories and those of long past. Physical distance may separate us, but we are as close as ever with phone calls, Facebook, and email. She has served as a role model for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and I am proud to say, "Happy Birthday" to her today.
One of the benefits of belonging to the Arbor Foundation is that one can choose to have a tree planted in the name of a friend and send them a card notifying them of this action. I selected three people today to receive cards which I mailed this afternoon. Nothing like combining two RAKs, planting trees and giving cards to friends! Hope they like them. I went to the mall to look for a few gifts and came upon a table with a display about Hospice. Staffed by a former student and the wife of a former student, I stopped to find out more about this important organization. I have always heard rave reviews of the care that Hospice provides to those with life-limiting illnesses. According to their literature, every year the National Hospice Organization works with more than 1.58 million patients focusing on "caring, not curing". I made a small donation, but more importantly, I told the volunteers that I would spread the word about this fund drive. If you live in this area, they will be at the mall all month. If you reside in another area, contact your local Hospice office and make a donation. Groups like this deserve our support.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-91664875720644245782013-12-08T19:51:00.001-05:002013-12-08T19:51:22.780-05:00Dec. 8, 2013 Christmas Tree Surprise

I am sure that we all know people who are very generous and supportive friends. They are always willing to give, expecting nothing much in return. The young woman who is currently renting from us is one of those individuals. She is quick to offer a compliment, send a note, leave a gift, or make a phone call just to say hello. She wasn't home today when we were at the property taking care of a few things. What a perfect opportunity to sneak in to leave a holiday surprise for her! I put a small pre-lit Christmas tree on the table in her room hoping that it will brighten her home away from home. It can be difficult to be away from family during a holiday season. Maybe this decoration will make things a little more cheerful.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-68407427388489029612013-12-07T20:14:00.001-05:002013-12-07T20:14:16.869-05:00Dec. 7, 2013 Kids and Community Gathering

I was able to help out at two community events today. This afternoon, we offered an activity filled event for local children at the high school. Although, the participation was low, those who attended had a great time, and I thoroughly enjoyed being with my Student Council members, plus one former student who offered to help was an added bonus! This evening was the village tree lighting and Christmas caroling where I served hot chocolate and coffee to lots of happy people. It was a chilly night with little wind - a perfect setting to visit with friends and neighbors. What a pleasant day to be out in the community!
It can be a fairly traumatic experience when a child loses a favorite blanket or a special toy. These items are security for a youngster. We had a bunch of missing Beanie Babies one summer, left inadvertently in a dresser drawer where they had been put for their nap, I assume. Fortunately, the hotel returned them, and now they sleep in our attic. Last week, we were informed that a child had lost a little hippo at our rental house. I searched high and low for this animal, finally telling them that I wasn't able to find it. Much to my surprise, as I was doing the wash, out fell a splash of purple. The hippo was resting among the sheets! I packaged up this beloved toy today, included a Christmas card, and mailed it. I think this tot will be mighty happy when this box arrives!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05865523186284156455noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-275737852414264424.post-44737678885621739912013-12-05T19:28:00.002-05:002013-12-05T19:33:42.422-05:00Dec. 5, 2013 Santa Collection

One of my best friends has a collection of Santas. It all began years ago with a simple gift and has grown in to more than one hundred. They come in all shapes, sizes, and themes - so many, that it is nearly impossible to buy her a new one for fear that she already has it. Today, I helped her unpack them and set these jolly fellows around the house. Every nook and cranny is filled with Kris Kringle smiling to his twins scattered around the rooms. This was no easy task, and one that took us nearly four hours, but how rewarding to spend time with a great friend setting up a scene which will bring pleasure to all who stop by her house this Christmas season.
