The mother of a friend passed away this week, and although I didn't know her personally, I am sure she was a special lady because her daughter is such a caring person. In lieu of flowers, requests were made for donations to the local fire department. It was an easy decision to write a check to this important organization in memory of this woman. I was dropping the contribution in the mail when I met the son-in-law of the deceased, and we had a short discussion about her excellent care at a nursing home in the nearby city. Losing a parent is always difficult, but it is admirable when the suggestion is made to honor them in a way that will help the community.
