Dec. 31, 2013 Final Thoughts#RAK

One year ago I made a promise to perform an act of kindness per day and share it with the world in a blog. Tonight, 2013 draws to a close  and so will end this journal. It has been an enlightening, gratifying experience which has shown me that there are always opportunities to reach out to someone with a small thoughtful gesture. Family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, students, strangers, animals, humanitarian groups, the list goes on and on - I have tried to make a difference in some way to show that kindness is contagious, and each one of us has the potential for bringing joy to a fellow human being or a furry friend. What I have accomplished is nothing extraordinary; everyone can show compassion and benevolence. One must remember that all of us have the power to make someone happy and the responsibility to look for these moments. So, today as I close this final post, my act of kindness is the following quotes that you may  reflect and share. I will continue to perform good deeds every day and encourage you to do the same. We are all on this planet together; let's watch one kind action lead to another. Have a blessed 2014, my friends.

"To practice five things under all circumstances constitutes perfect virtue; these five are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness, and kindness."
Confucius

" A tree is known by its fruits; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship and he who plants kindness gathers love.
St. Basil

" No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."

Dec. 28-30, 2013 The Value of Life

The Old North Church, Boston
I spent the last three days in Boston where I didn't have an opportunity to write this blog; however, I continued my random acts of kindness during my visit. I left quarters in several vending machines at a Thruway rest area; I made donations at all the historic sites we toured, and finally I placed a small gift on the table of our hosts to thank them for their hospitality. But all these acts are insignificant in light of the message that I want and need to express. Last night our community lost a young man in an accident, and in this area where most everyone knows one another, this is a loss that ripples through the families. Our prayers go out to all his friends and relatives. Please take the time every day to tell those you love how much they mean to you. Don't take life for granted; appreciate every moment you have with each other.

Dec. 27, 2013 Happy Birthday, Little Brother

When you grow up in a family of five children, and you are the youngest, and your birthday is two days after Christmas, your special day might get overlooked from year to year. That is unless you are the cute, nice, sweet one whom everyone dotes on, of course. That would be my youngest brother whose birthday is today. Although I am not able to see him often,  we keep in touch through photos and email. I sent him a gift today through Facebook for all the world to see! Happy Birthday, little brother. Hope to get together in 2014!

Dec. 26, 2013 #Buying#Local

There are so many options when it comes to buying anything these days. The ease of Internet shopping makes it very attractive to the consumer, and, I admit, it is often preferable to avoid the crowds and travel concerns surrounding a visit to the stores by just clicking the mouse a few times. Voila! Your purchase is on its way. Today, however, we headed to a local ski shop to check out some boots. From the minute we walked through the door, we were welcomed and provided with information by the friendly employees. I made sure to tell the owner how impressed I was with her staff, and complimented her on her business. She thanked us for the support . Remember to shop at these community enterprises. Their success depends on our patronage.

Dec. 25, 2013 #Christmas#Traditions

Traditional Tree
Family traditions are one of the most important parts of holiday celebrations. I was fortunate this year that two of my three children were able to be home for Christmas, and we could carry on the traditions we have developed over the years. The fence is around the tree; the stuffed animals sit in front of it; the manger is set up on the side table, and the stockings are hanging from their decorative metal hooks. I was excited to continue the rituals for another year. There will be times in the future when it may not be possible, and then we will create some new methods of celebrating these family times together. But for now, I am content to be surrounded by my loved ones and the customs we hold dear. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

Dec. 24, 2013 Expressing Gratitude

Christmas Eve
I believe that many of us are grateful for a multitude of things, but we often forget to express it or perhaps we think that those around us are aware of our appreciation without us telling them. It never hurts to let people know that we are thankful for their presence in our lives. My goal for this day was to recognize a few individuals for their positive impact on me. I posted and shared a thank you to one of the journalists for her wonderful Christmas story in this morning's paper. I delivered several bottles of wine to friends in the village. I was able to give and receive warm hugs and greetings as I saw former students and friends throughout the day. And although I can not tell him in person, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my gratitude to my father who was born on this day in 1928; you taught me so much, and for that I am indebted.

Dec. 23, 2013 Holding the Door

I believe that basic rules of politeness require a person entering a door to hold it open for those closely following behind. It simply seems a courteous thing to do. Today I had to go to the mall for some last minute shopping as did thousands of other people. We all looked slightly frantic; although, there still remains tomorrow for the true procrastinators. As I entered the building, I saw three women who were approaching the exit, so I held the door for them . What a pleasant exchange of thank you and Merry Christmas, I got. They were so grateful for this small gesture. Later, when I was leaving, I again held the door for a woman with a cane, and she stopped to tell me what a nice thing I had done by waiting for her to slowly enter the store. I am amazed that this little action brought such smiles and holiday wishes. It really doesn't take much to brighten someone's day.

Dec. 22, 2013 #HomeTownCable

Track Meet Covered by Home Town Cable
We are fortunate to have a man in our community who has created a wealth of videos depicting our school presentations, athletic contests, history lectures, board meetings, and current events over the decades. These are broadcast on a local channel and are available on the Internet. What fun it is to watch one's children singing in the elementary Christmas show or scoring that goal in the big hockey game years later. If you want to stay informed on village happenings, these reports will enlighten you.  We have come to expect this man at every activity, and forget that it takes funding to film and produce all these shows. I sent him a donation today which will go toward some of the expenses. I know many residents enjoy Home Town Cable, so take a minute to say thank you with a small contribution. It will be appreciated.

Dec. 21, 2013 Christmas Treats

An ice storm was predicted for this weekend since the beginning of the week, so I made my plans early to bake today. I found recipes, bought ingredients, and cleared my schedule except for baking. It was relaxing to listen to the ice pinging off the windows knowing that I didn't have to go anywhere. After preparing several dozen cookies, I arranged some of them in holiday bags, threw on my coat, pulled on my boots, and headed outside to deliver them. It was somewhat treacherous to walk on the icy sidewalk, but I made it across the street where the little girl was delighted with her treats. Then, I went next door - no one home! So, I traipsed over to the following house - again, no answer. It was too risky to go much further. You can guess what I am doing tomorrow -slipping and sliding back to these homes with deliveries of cookies! Be safe, my friends!

Dec. 20, 2013 #Retirement# Nursing

Today I honor my sister who is retiring from a long career as a nurse. I have much respect for nurses - the hard work, the tremendous knowledge which must remain updated, a supportive
Sisters, Oregon Coast
attitude, and the strength to put up with the patients and family . I couldn't do it. Give me a classroom of crazy teenagers instead. But my sister is well respected for her dedication and skills to the profession, and today is her last day. Monday, she won't have to get up early to head to the hospital, and instead can choose to do what she wants to do. I sent her a little gift which I know she'll enjoy, but more importantly I send her best wishes for a happy retirement filled with all the adventures she decides to complete. She has given decades to caring for others; now it's time to care for herself!

Dec. 19, 2013 My Birthday Acts of Kindness

Skiing on the Golf Course
I chose to focus on myself today which I hope you will not find too selfish, but being my birthday, I wanted to create the perfect day. My ideal day holds three requirements: to learn something, to give something, and to do something. In addition, talking to my family always brightens the day for me. I imagine you are wondering how it went, right? I learned that Grandma Moses said" Life is what you make it. Always has been, always will be" when I reread the wonderful book called How Many People Does It Take To Make A Difference? One. I wrote two letters of recommendations for former students because if I can help make someone's dream of going to college come true  then I must try to help them. And finally, I went cross country skiing on the local golf course all alone, breathing in the fresh air, struggling to maintain my balance on the bumpy mounds of snow. Exercise is good for the soul. I gabbed on the phone with my family and my friends sent me heartfelt messages. It was the perfect birthday. I am blessed.

Dec. 18, 2013 Giving and Receiving RAK at the Gas Station

Snowy Seats, Lake Placid, NY
When I ran into the co-owner of our local convenience store at the hardware store this morning, I figured I would see her again soon because I needed to buy gas, but I didn't tell her that I was stopping by her store. Maybe she guessed that I would be by in the next day or two because when I entered to pay for the gas, she handed me a bank deposit slip complete with our personal checking account numbers printed on it that I had inadvertently dropped in the post office. I was extremely grateful to her for seeing it and then holding it for me. In turn, I bought a beverage for the next person coming in for a warm drink on this wintry day. Although I had  intended to remain anonymous in this pay-it-forward gesture, as it turned out, the recipient caught up with me in the parking lot and thanked me profusely. It was that kind of day: one resident helping out another. The joys of living in a village where nearly everyone knows everyone.

Dec. 17, 2013 Double Deeds #Hairdresser

Winter, Marcy Dam, Adirondacks
My planned good deed was to generously tip my hairdresser. I've been going to the same salon for over fifteen years, and it is always fun to joke with the employees and other clients while being pampered. This is a profession which is valued by many women and often men, but can be taken for granted. My hairdresser was pleased with my offering today which is certainly well deserved. The random act of kindness also occurred at the salon when I met a young man whose father I know slightly and learned that he has big travel plans ahead of him. We spent several minutes discussing the pros and cons of modes of transportation. He had many questions for me about exploring Europe, and I enjoyed sharing advice with him.  The conversation took an interesting turn when we discovered that we both know a former student who now lives in New Zealand. It truly is a small world!

Dec. 16, 2013 Being Grateful

Village Holiday Gathering, Champlain, NY
I like to thank those around me who are professional, polite, and pleasant to work with. Whether it is a salesclerk, the postal carrier, a secretary, or the car repair person, I have much respect for their ability to do their job well while interacting courteously with the public. Today, I gave a couple of small gifts to the women who work in the Village office. They are consistently positive and considerate in the dealings with me and the residents. I had the pleasure of hearing one of them tell me of her numerous acts of kindness performed yesterday. From shoveling snow to paying it forward at Dunkin Donuts to delivering a sweet treat to a friend, she was incredibly kind in her good deeds! I am lucky to be surrounded by good people doing their best to help others. It doesn't take much to let them know they are appreciated.

Dec. 15, 2013 Triple RAK at the Grocery Store

Winter, Champlain, NY
I did not expect to have many opportunities for a random act of kindness today. The roads are covered with snow and the air is cold. Most people are not going to venture out in these conditions, but I had to go to the grocery store, so I bundled up and drove slowly there. The supermarket was nearly deserted as I had thought it would be; however, performing an RAK was quickly accomplished. A couple examining various types of squash thanked me for advice about the type to buy. Noticing several common items on sale, I grabbed a few to donate to the Food Shelf box on the way out of the store. Finally, I found a few dollars at the bottom of my purse and gave them to the young hockey players who were ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Three little deeds, but they will all be appreciated by someone in time.

Dec. 14, 2013 #Kindle Book For a Stranger

Colorado
I don't know the young man I sent a Kindle book to today. He is the neighbor of some of our family members in Colorado, and I was told he likes to read. In particular, he devours facts and figures about all kinds of topics. Right now, he is fascinated with migratory birds - types and travel patterns. I wasn't sure which bird books he has, so I sent the latest Guinness Book of World Records. I think he'll find it interesting, and I bet he'll be very surprised that a gift arrived from New York. It's fun to spread these RAKs around the country!

Dec. 15, 2013 #Christmas Puzzle Gifts

Little Free Library In Winter
I had planned to remove my Little Free Library standing next to the sidewalk in front of the house for the winter. It is frigid here with snow, ice, and below zero temperatures. Who would drop off and borrow books during this season? Much to my surprise, it is still being used, so we have decided to leave it for all those hearty souls to enjoy. Today, I placed several kids Christmas puzzle books inside with the colorful covers facing outward to catch the eyes of some children passing by. They are free for the taking. Spread the word to the youngsters you know to stop by and select one. Encourage them to choose a book or two as well. Christmas vacation is a great time to read!

Dec. 12, 2013 Car Accidents and Coffee

It is a pretty upsetting start to the day when you are involved in a car accident. That's what happened to one of my friends today, and although, fortunately, she was not injured, her vehicle is badly damaged. There isn't much I can do to alleviate her situation, but I wanted to surprise her with a little something , so I sent her a gift card to Starbucks. She was very grateful and also explained that she had spilled her Starbucks coffee all over when the other car hit hers. I am happy that she is fine, only suffering from wet clothes. Cars can be repaired.

Dec. 11, 2013 #HappyBirthday, Mom

Family
My mother was born years ago on this day in a little town in South Dakota, and so began a life of raising children and creating a happy home. Throughout the good times and bad, she has remained a strong, caring woman who is always ready to listen and laugh to recent stories and those of long past. Physical distance may separate us, but we are as close as ever with phone calls, Facebook, and email. She has served as a role model for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and I am proud to say, "Happy Birthday" to her today.
P.S. Your gift is in the mail!

Dec. 10, 2013 #Arbor Foundation and Christmas Wishes

Oak Tree, Louisiana
One of the benefits of belonging to the Arbor Foundation is that one can choose to have a tree planted in the name of a friend and send them a card notifying them of this action. I selected three people today  to receive cards which I mailed this afternoon. Nothing like combining two RAKs, planting trees and giving cards to friends! Hope they like them.

Dec. 8, 2013 Supporting#Hospice

Fund Raising for Hospice
I went to the mall to look for a few gifts and came upon a table with a display about Hospice. Staffed by a former student and the wife of a former student, I stopped to find out more about this important organization. I have always heard rave reviews of the care that Hospice provides to those with life-limiting illnesses. According to their literature, every year the National Hospice Organization works with more than 1.58 million patients focusing on "caring, not curing". I made a small donation, but more importantly, I told the volunteers that I would spread the word about this fund drive. If you live in this area, they will be at the mall all month. If you reside in another area, contact your local Hospice office and make a donation. Groups like this deserve our support.

Dec. 8, 2013 Christmas Tree Surprise

A Little Christmas Tree Surprise
I am sure that we all know people who are very generous and supportive friends. They are always willing to give, expecting nothing much in return. The young woman who is currently renting from us is one of those individuals. She is quick to offer a compliment, send a note, leave a gift, or make a phone call just to say hello. She wasn't home today when we were at the property taking care of a few things. What a perfect opportunity to sneak in to leave a holiday surprise for her! I put a small pre-lit Christmas tree on the table in her room hoping that it will brighten her home away from home. It can be difficult to be away from family during a holiday season. Maybe this decoration will make things a little more cheerful.

Dec. 7, 2013 Kids and Community Gathering

I was able to help out at two community events today. This afternoon, we offered an activity filled event for local children at the high school. Although, the participation was low, those who attended had a great time, and I thoroughly enjoyed being with my Student Council members, plus one former student who offered to help was an added bonus! This evening was the village tree lighting and Christmas caroling where I served hot chocolate and coffee to lots of happy people. It was a chilly night with little wind - a perfect setting to visit with friends and neighbors. What a pleasant day to be out in the community!

Dec. 6, 2013 Purple Hippo

The comfort of a blankie and a doll
It can be a fairly traumatic experience when a child loses a favorite blanket or a special toy. These items are security for a youngster. We had a bunch of missing Beanie Babies one summer, left inadvertently in a dresser drawer where they had been put for their nap, I assume. Fortunately, the hotel returned them, and now they sleep in our attic. Last week, we were informed that a child had lost a little hippo at our rental house. I searched high and low for this animal, finally telling them that I wasn't able to find it. Much to my surprise, as I was doing the wash, out fell a splash of purple. The hippo was resting among the sheets! I packaged up this beloved toy today, included a Christmas card, and mailed it. I think this tot will be mighty happy when this box arrives!

Dec. 5, 2013 Santa Collection

Hanging Out With Santa
One of my best friends has a collection of Santas. It all began years ago with a simple gift and has grown in to more than one hundred. They come in all shapes, sizes, and themes - so many, that it is nearly impossible to buy her a new one for fear that she already has it. Today, I helped her unpack them and set these jolly fellows around the house. Every nook and cranny is filled with Kris Kringle smiling to his twins scattered around the rooms. This was no easy task, and one that took us nearly four hours, but how rewarding to spend time with a great friend setting up a scene which will bring pleasure to all who stop by her house this Christmas season.

Dec. 4, 2013 Help#PostOffice

Montreal
I have traveled to many countries and found that the most ordinary tasks such as making a phone call, purchasing a ticket, or reading a time schedule can be daunting with language barriers and cultural differences, so today when I saw the perplexed look on the face of the woman in front of me at the post office, I quickly  offered to help. She was grateful for my assistance in mailing her letters, and as we walked out together , we chatted for a short time about the beautiful weather this morning. Her accent told me that she was French Canadian. These neighbors to the north are often mocked and even disliked by local citizens, but in my opinion, you will probably find as many kind, friendly ones as you would find Americans with those qualities. There are plenty; you just have to get to know them.

Dec. 3. 2013 #Curtains

Living Room with Curtains
I don't profess to be an expert at anything. In fact the older I get, the less I realize that I know, and that is why I must continue learning. However, I do understand quite a bit about curtains. One can certainly go through life with a limited knowledge of drapes, tie backs, pleats, and tabs and so on, but there are times when this information is very useful. Take today, for example, I was doing some Christmas shopping when I passed through the curtain section of the store and came upon a man staring at all the fabric samples hanging from the wall. The confused look on his face said it all, so I asked if he needed help. I spent the next fifteen minutes explaining his options to him. He was extremely appreciative for the advice and told me that I should get a job in this store. I think I'll stick to retirement!

Dec. 2, 2013 Walking Slowly

The Flexibility of the Young!
There wasn't much space between the cars in the parking lot at the doctor's office. It was a tight fit getting in and out of a vehicle for an able bodied adult, but for a person with a mobility issue, it would be very difficult. I came out of the building at the same time as an older man who was walking very slowly with a cane. I could have sped up, and entered my car quickly, but instead I asked him where he was parked. He pointed to the car next to mine, so I gave him plenty of space and time to climb in. I think many of us take our ability to move around easily for granted, and as I waited patiently watching him struggle to maneuver into his car, I became well aware of how fortunate I am.

Dec. 1, 2013 #GivingSunday

The pressure to spend money is upon us. From Thanksgiving Day sales, Black Friday deals, Shop Local Saturday to Cyber Monday, we are inundated with messages to buy, buy, buy. I love the holidays and giving gifts is a favorite activity, but this onslaught of ads to take advantage of a bargain is overwhelming. It was refreshing to read about #GivingSunday in today's newspaper, a movement by Parade Magazine to encourage people to support a worthy cause. I researched the suggested organizations this morning and chose to make a contribution to One Step Ahead, a foundation which supplies child amputees with prosthetics, rehab, and sports opportunities. It is a small donation which will make a difference in the life of a child, and that is what part of Christmas is about.

Nov. 30, 2013 Christmas Cards#USPS Stamps

I am quite sure that my local post office is the best one in the United States. It is a meeting place for many residents to catch up on news while picking up their mail or sending packages, and it is staffed by competent , friendly employees who do their job well with a smile. It is not surprising then that when I asked for help carrying out my RAK today, the worker was willing to help. I know people are beginning to mail their Christmas cards, so I bought ten holiday themed stamps requesting that they be passed on to someone who came in with cards to be posted. I love sending cards as well as receiving them, and I hope that this pre-paid postage will be a nice surprise for the recipient! Happy Card Writing!

Nov. 29, 2013 #Support the Locals

A Few of My Purchases
Tomorrow is officially the "buy local"
day, but I decided to forgo the Black Friday madness of the larger city to the south and shop in my little village this afternoon. We don't have many businesses; however, there is one clothing store downtown which offers unique items at reasonable prices, and is run by a family that I know well. I am always happy to support them, and today was no exception. I was able to find several colorful, warm scarves and pairs of leather gloves which I purchased for gifts. I was so excited about my selections that I promptly gave them to everyone when I went home. I guess I will have to go back to find something else for their Christmas gifts!

Nov. 28, 2013 Cooking for the Family#Thanksgiving

Today I am thankful for the family members who were able to travel safely to our house to celebrate another Thanksgiving together. I had the joy of preparing a feast with some help, of course, and the pleasure of watching all savor it. At one point, it was silent as we were all so busy eating that no one wanted to take time to talk! Family, friends, food, and fun all wrapped up in a single day. Priceless!

Nov. 27, 2013 Home for the Holidays

There is no place like home, especially during the holidays. When one is young, home is often where you grew up, but as we age, the definition of home changes, and due to life's circumstances, we may find ourselves far away from what we called home many years ago. I have a friend who moved here around nine years ago . She is one of the most positive, sweet, caring women that I know, and despite tragedy, she has chosen to stay in our community to raise her children. I "wined" her today by bringing her a bottle of Merlot for her Thanksgiving dinner. I know she won't be in her childhood home, but she will be in her adopted village who cherishes her as one of their own.

Nov. 26, 2013 Lunch#LakesideCoffee

The best place in town for lunch and laughs
A teacher's schedule is very regimented. Divided into blocks for classes, study halls, preparation times, and other duties, one knows minute by minute where one will be.  Rarely is there time to leave the building for lunch, so when I heard my former colleagues would be able to go out for a meal, I knew I wanted to meet them. I arrived at the coffee shop a few minutes early in order to set up my RAK. After informing the server that I was paying for a couple of meals, I waited for all to arrive. They were surprised by the treat, and I was entertained by their stories. It felt so good to be back in their company. I can't wait to see them again!

Nov. 25, 2013 Bread and Budgets

Baguette, Monaco
I would guess the woman standing in the bread aisle was in her eighties. She was pushing her cart slowly, checking out the prices on the loaves as I pulled up behind her. I made a comment about the prices of baked goods being so high these days, and that led to a lengthy conversation about being alone, spending money on a loaf of bread when it might go bad before it was gone, and other ways to save a few dollars. She recalled a time when a loaf of bread cost 29 cents! It was a delightful conversation between strangers. I hope my friendly overture brightened her day.

Nov. 24, 2013 #In Sickness and In Health

Three Generations
My act of kindness is certainly not random today; indeed it is part of a vow I took decades ago and consider important and binding. We promised to support each other in sickness and in health, so it is my turn to be the nurse as my husband mends. I will tend to all those tasks that one does daily without thought until one's mobility is limited. These duties are not a chore , but rather what we do for family and friends who are under the weather. Just as I have cared for my children over the years, I am fortunate to be able to assist my husband recover. " For better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health" - these words first published in 1549 are still the basis of a strong relationship. Take care of your partners, friends.

Nov. 23, 2013 Friendly Employee#coupon

Time to Decorate
The home décor store was packed today with people wanting to start decorating for the holidays. It was difficult to get through the aisles, and more than once I had to apologize for being in someone's way. Of course,
the check out line was long, as well, and there were only two clerks working. My good luck, however, that another saleswoman opened a register just as it was my turn to pay. She joked with me a bit about her lack of skill as a cashier, and we shared a laugh over her having to ring up something twice. She was so polite and pleasant that I handed her a discount coupon for a local restaurant that I had in my pocket. I had planned on giving it to a friendly person today, and as I explained to this woman, she was the perfect recipient!

Nov. 22, 2013. Passing the Time#Hospital

It is so important to be nearby when a family member is hospitalized. A supportive comment and genuine smile can mean much to the patient. Often, however, they are sleeping, and there is not much one can do to be supportive. I brought plenty of reading materials with me to pass the time these last three days, and it did make the hours go by. This morning, before leaving my house, I gathered a half dozen recent magazines that we had already read. I left them in the waiting room for other people to peruse as they also pass the time waiting for their loved one to recover. I hope it makes their days seem less long.

Nov. 21, 2013 #Angel Fund Dinner

I stopped by a local business this morning to pay for a couple of tickets to a fundraising dinner which is being held tomorrow night. I won't be able to attend, but I wanted to make sure that someone else could go free of charge. The true heroes of this event, however, are the generous people who are organizing this big meal. Called the Angel Fund Dinner, this group expects to serve over five hundred meals right down the street from me with the goal of raising money to assist the local children, families, and food shelves. What an undertaking this is! I can't imagine buying the food, cooking it, and serving so many people. A basic Thanksgiving meal seems a large task to me. The real angels are the individuals who are doing all this work to benefit our community. We are blessed that they live among us. Please attend if you can.

Nov. 20, 2013 Kindness#CVPH

Sunset From Hospital
I witnessed many acts of kindness today as I accompanied a family member to the hospital for a long procedure. From the volunteers, to the orderlies, to the nurses, doctors, and food service workers, there were expressions of caring, concern, and professionalism. It is intimidating to be in a system that one doesn't understand well, but the patience and politeness of the employees make it so much more comfortable to ask questions. My own good deed was to give a small gift to one of the nurses who was very thoughtful towards me. She brought me a coffee and a snack realizing what a long day I had had. It brightened my afternoon as did the concern shown by the all the workers that I met today at our local hospital.

Nov. 19, 2013 #LittleFreeLibrary and Encouraging Writing

Little Free Library Open for Reading AND Writing
My little library standing next to the sidewalk in front of my house has been quite successful since we put it up last summer. Books disappear, and new ones are placed inside frequently. This effort is to promote reading, but why couldn't it be used to encourage writing? So today, I placed pencils, pens, and small notepads in amidst the books. Maybe next week I will add some notecards and envelopes to see if I can start a writing campaign. Who knows, maybe I will get a few letters or perhaps one of you will, too. Written communication beyond a text message isn't a bad idea.

Nov. 18, 2013 #OperationChristmasChild

Their slogan is "The power of a simple gift", and that sums up the huge effort that an organization called Samaritan's Purse coordinates during their Christmas box campaign. Founded in 1970, this group plays the role of the Good Samaritan around the world as they offer aid and hope to those in need. I have wanted to participate in Operation Christmas Child for several years, and when I read that there would be a collection site in my village, I went shopping. What fun to buy toys, craft supplies, clothing, and toiletries all to fit into a shoe box. I took my box to the church that is hosting the gift drive, left a donation for shipping, and indicated that it was for a 5 - 7 year old girl. I will never see the outcome of this RAK, but I am sure a little girl somewhere will be delighted with her gifts.

Nov. 17, 2013 Circus Tickets#Shriners

Tanzania
I paid it forward with circus tickets today. I like to make a yearly donation to the Shriners to support their efforts to allow the local children go to the circus. My contribution will help pay for some of these entrance fees. I won't get to see the kids at the circus, but I know they will enjoy the show.

Nov. 16, 2013 My Aunt

My Aunt, My Uncle, and My Mother
I sent a package to my aunt today. You may be thinking that this action is not very special; people mail gifts to family members frequently. But this is an important deed because this woman, the only sister of my mother, will be delighted to receive mail, and especially happy to open it and find coloring books. A serious illness which nearly killed her over sixty years ago changed her life forever. Her body continues to age, but her mind is still young. Sweet, soft-spoken, and caring, she loves to sing and color pictures, but her fears are strong making her timid and unsure.  The highlight of her solitary weeks are my mother's visits when they share stories while having a cup of tea. My aunt is special - not because of beauty or wealth or athleticism or talent. She is unique due to circumstances that have made her life difficult physically, mentally, and emotionally. Most importantly, she is grateful for a kind word, a small gift, a simple song, and attention from those who love her. I know she'll love her package, but not as much as I loved sending it to her!

Nov. 15, 2013 That's for the Birds

Estes Park, Colorado
The leaves have fallen; the corn has been harvested, and the apples picked from the trees. Winter is approaching which means there will be less available for the birds to eat. The Canada geese are flying south, but there are plenty of other birds that remain around here, so today I loaded our little red barn bird feeder with some chow. The pleasure is twofold, of course. We can watch cardinals, blue jays, and sparrows among others while our feathered friends enjoy a meal. What a joy to have nature right outside the window on those snowy mornings.

Nov. 14, 2013 Greeting Cards#Thanksgiving

I sent out some greeting cards today to wish family and friends happy Thanksgiving. One of these cards was mailed to a stranger. Her name was given to me by a friend as someone whose house was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy and still has not been able to return home. I wrote a simple message conveying that she and the other victims of these natural disasters have not been forgotten. I hope that my card will brighten her day, but more importantly I trust that all will work out and she will soon
be able to move back to her community that means so much to her.

Nov. 13, 2013 #donations#philippines

My message will be short and simple. Please send a donation to one of the humanitarian groups working to help the people in the Philippines after the horrific typhoon Haiyan devastated many parts of the country. It is easy to donate through Facebook, Amazon, or one of the other organizations rated reputable by CharityWatch. My donation was not large, but all of us offering a small amount of money together will help supply water, food, medical supplies, and shelter. It will only take a few minutes; the benefits will be far-reaching.

Nov. 12, 2013 Giving a Ride

Cold November Day, Lake Placid
It was a cold, blustery day, and we aren't used to temperatures in the 30s yet. When I saw the man trudging up the hill near the post office, I figured he must be mighty chilly. I recognized him as I got closer, and put down the window to offer him a ride. He was happy to climb in a warm vehicle. Look out for those who have no car, especially this time of year. It is the safe and generous thing to do.

Nov. 11, 2013 Pass the Wine , Please.

You've Been Wined!
Several weeks ago, I thought of an activity to surprise my friends and encourage others to pay it forward. Calling it "You've been wined!", I created a flyer which explains that the recipient has received a bottle of wine with the request that they pass another bottle on to someone else with a copy of this notice. Today, I met the mother of a great young friend, and knowing how much I appreciate her daughter, I was certain that I would like her mother. She was the first to "be wined", and she immediately knew who she wanted to pass it on to. My next destination was to the house of a former colleague who retired several years ago. I haven't seen her much recently, but I know she likes wine. We talked for over an hour, catching up on family and travel news. What a wonderful day spent enjoying the company of these gregarious, intelligent women. Beware: you may be the next one "to be wined".

Nov. 10, 2013 #Polarisproject

Light in the Darkness
Some unknown force has led me to reading about slavery recently. I read The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grisson and Toni Morrison's Beloved, both of which expose the horrors of slavery. Tonight I will see the movie, 12 years a Slave, which has a connection to upstate New York. If you believe that I am living in the past with these issues of slavery, you are quite mistaken. There are an estimated 60,000 slaves in the United States today. This is an issue that we don't want to acknowledge, and even when we are aware of it, we often choose to ignore. So my deed for today is to spread the word, send a donation, and become better informed. Please check out the Polaris Project and sign their pledge to help those controlled by human traffickers. Slavery didn't end with the Civil War. We all need to learn the signs and assist these victims. I hope you will share this message with others who care.

Nov. 9, 2013 Coat Drive#Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts at Coat Drive
A troop of local fifth grade Girl Scouts was holding a coat drive today. I love to support these grassroots efforts for community outreach, particularly when they are run by children. I gathered up several winter coats this morning, piled them in the van, and headed to the Fire Station where the girls were waiting. Their leader explained that the coats would be available for people through the school, and then at the church-run thrift store. Any that are not taken will be sent to another organization to hand out this winter. What a win/win situation for everyone. The children performed a great service; I cleaned out a closet, and those needing a heavy jacket will have one. Thanks to the Girl Scouts for coordinating this event!

Nov. 8, 2013 #Holiday Mail For Heroes

A  Few Holiday Cards
I had been looking forward to this little act of kindness all week. Holiday Mail For Heroes is a program sponsored by the American Red Cross which delivers thousands of cards to veterans, active duty service men and woman, and military families throughout the world. I gathered up some holiday cards that I had saved, wrote a heartfelt message inside, signed them, and put them in the mail. The instructions say to send them together without their envelopes by December 6 in a larger mailer addressed to:
Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

It is rewarding to think that we can brighten a service member's holiday season through this small RAK. Hope you will join me in this effort.

Nov. 7, 2013 #WelcomeKit

One Activity Available in the Village
Anyone moving into our village will soon have a brochure , paper or electronic, welcoming them to our area. I have spent several hours during the past week organizing information, writing, and editing facts which will make the transition an easier process. Today I put the final touches on the pamphlet, and after some assistance from the Village office staff, I submitted it for final approval. A few of my photos featuring several residents are included, and I hope all who use it find it helpful. My hope is that it will be one small step in making newcomers feel comfortable in their new home.
